Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world. – Joel A. Barker

Visualisation is an artform, a creative tool used to usher your most sacred dreams into existence.

Vision boarding is a brilliant facilitator of visualisation, useful for dreaming and scheming up goals and bringing them to fruition.

Regular glimpses and reminders in the form of a vision board may help to jolt your dreams alive, keep self-belief strong and sweeping possibility front of mind.

I have four vision boards dressing the walls of my office (no, there ain’t much wall space left!). Each serves a different purpose, though they each have this in common: My boards water the seeds of intention I’ve planted for myself.

Here are three simple steps to create a vision board:

1. Dream it up. Plot out.

What is it you really want? Do you want to be a graphic designer? A sous-chef? A world traveller? A yogini? Do you want a promotion, a new home or to study a new language?

Open your heart to self-inquiry and seek what lies within. Reach for the courage to think big and grab hold. What’s there? Write it down.

No dream is too big or too beyond your reach.

Even the world’s greatest innovators – Steve Jobs and those of his ilk – sowed the seeds of their dreams with little more than a suitcase and an unquenchable thirst for their vision.

2. Be a bower-bird

Gather pictures of your favourite pics, quotes and special little trinkets. Flick through your favourite mags, blogs and flicker accounts (if you have one – I don’t, but I hear it’s great!) for images that channel the visions you’ve declared for yourself. Print them and then…

3. Create

Scoop up all your quotes and pics and get pinning. Arrange and collage them on your board and voila!

Now, every time you look at it use it as rocket fuel to spur you on to actualise your vision.

Three sneaky tips:

+ Once you’ve created your vision board, make sure you consciously revisit it daily. It’s all very fun to create a vision board, but if you’re not in the practice of looking at it, it won’t do you any good!

+ Be inspired into action. As an adjunct to my first little tip, follow through with  actions that will lead you to achieve your visions. Start small and build. Remember, Oprah wasn’t built in a day!

+ If you’re in Australia, you can pick up gorgeous vision boards from Kikki K (like the one in my picture – I have two of these babies). I also use a whiteboard from Typo and a cork board I picked up in a variety store years ago. I haven’t checked, but it might be an idea to check out stores like Big W and Kmart if you want other options, and of course your own local variety stores.
